FAQ's/ Spa Terminology

Q. What does 120v/240v mean?

A. When a product is rated for 120v/240v the voltage that is powering the product can be either 120 volts or 240 volts. It is considered dual voltage and can work for either application.

Q. What is the difference between 220 volts, 230 volts and 240 volts?

A. They are the same for all practical purposes. If your component being replaced uses a tag of 220v, 230v or 240v the replacement part will be tagged with any of the three and is compatible.

Q. What is the difference between 110v, 115v and 120v?

A. They are the same for all practical purposes. If your component being replaced uses a tag of 110v, 115v or 120v the replacement part will be tagged with any of the three and is compatible.

Q. My pump is a 2 horsepower can I replace it with a more powerful pump?

A. Yes but, by not more than 1 horsepower. Increasing the horsepower too much may damage your spa and new pump, voiding your warranty. Your Hot Tub was engineered for a certain water flow (GPM) to allow it to operate for years. If drastic changes are made the life expectancy of the components and or pump will greatly decrease.

Q. I have an AquaFlo spa pump and do not know what horsepower or frame size it is?

A. We have supplied our customers with a chart to help guide you to the correct AquaFlo pump. Please click on the link to view our chart AquaFlo Pump Chart

Q. What is the difference between a 48 frame and 56 frame thru-bolt spa motor?

A. There are a few differences between the two motors. The 48 frame uses a smaller bolt pattern to hold the wet end onto the motor. The motor diameter is also smaller than the 56 frame. The two motors are not interchangeable unless the complete pump is being replaced. To see a comparison of the two motors and measurements of the thru-bolts please click on the link Waterway Pump Guide

Q. What is the difference between a wet end and pump?

A. A pump is a mechanical device that has the ability to move water. A “pump” would comprise of a motor and wet end, because the two together have the ability to move water but, not as individual items.

Tech Tips

BW Spa Parts knows that finding the correct part for your application can be difficult and frustrating. Let our knowledgable technical support staff help you find that part. Here you will find some tips on finding the correct part for your application.

  • Most parts on a hot tub are not manufactured by the same company but, by another manufacturer that specializes in components that will perform a function.
  • Most parts on a hot tub will actually have a part number on it.
  • When working on your own spa remember that Safety is always job #1.
  • When searching for a circuit board, the most important number is located on the eprom chip. An example of this is as follows ( H136R1A, H50R1A, SAR200R1B....)
  • This chip number will allow your spa to function with the spa side control.
  • When searching for voltage (ie. 115v) you will also come across 110v and 120v. Yes they are all interchangeable.
  • When searching for voltage (ie. 230v) you will also come across 220v and 240v. Yes they are all interchangeable.
  • When looking for an AMP rating the rule of thumb is: The higher the voltage the lower the amp draw. (ie. 120v 5amp, 115v 7amp, 110v 10amp)
  • When looking for a heater element and you are not sure which one you need for your Flow-thru assembly. Match the KW and use or UNIVERSAL element that will fit most flow-thru applications.
